Galleria Borghese

The most important part of the collection dates back to Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1579-1633), who paid particular attention to all expressions of antique, renaissance and contemporary art, evocating a new Golden Age.  A passionate connoisseur of antique sculpture, the Cardinal also supported the creation of new sculptures, particularly marble group sculptures, so that they could be compared. Many changes, losses and purchases, were made to the collection in the next three centuries, from the confiscation of over one hundred paintings of Cavalier d'Arpino, in 1607, to the particular acquisition  of the Deposition by Raphael the year after, and the purchase of Danae by Correggio and the famous Portrait of Paolina Bonaparte by Canova. Recently, also the old deposits of the Pinacoteca are accessible to the public.
