MAXXI is the first national institution dedicated to contemporary creativity. Managed by the Fondazione MAXXI, it hosts two museums: MAXXI Architettura and MAXXI Arte.
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and inaugurated in 2010, the building’s fluid lines define an extraordinary example of contemporary architecture. A workshop for experimentation and innovation, MAXXI produces and presents exhibitions, performances, workshops, lectures.
MAXXI’s 29,000 square meters also contain an auditorium, a large outdoor plaza for live events, a research centre - MAXXI B.A.S.E, a library and archives - two bookshops, a cafeteria and a restaurant/bar MAXXI 21.
The permanent collections of MAXXI Architettura (over 75,000 drawings and projects) and MAXXI Arte (more than 300 works by artists from around the globe) are displayed on rotation, together with temporary exhibitions focused on leading contemporary figures and 20th century masters as points of reference for younger generations. Permanent works include installations by Anish Kapoor, Sol Lewitt, Maurizio Mochetti, Giuseppe Penone and Massimo Grimaldi.
