Contemporary arts of the XX and XXI century
Peggy Guggenheim inaugurated Jackson Pollock's first personal exhibition in her famous gallery in New York in 1943. Characterized by a choice of mythological subject matter, by recourse to powerful calligraphic marks and by a vibrant palette of colours, from that germinal moment on Pollock's output developed increasingly towards a dynamic and gestural style that was to embody the idea of Abstract Expressionism - a crucial trend for the future of art history both in America and globally. The farsighted support that Peggy Guggenheim offered Pollock at that decisive moment in history reflects in a nutshell, and in exemplary fashion, the entire history of late 20th century art in America, which was to choose New York as its focal point to develop the first genuinely American avant-garde movement with an international breadth and depth. The exhibition, curated by Susan Davidson and Lauren Hinkson, will provide visitors with the opportunity to enjoy a sweeping visual overview of the way the main trends in American art developed after World War II, offering a retrospective of masterpieces from the superb Guggenheim collections relating to the themes of Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, Post-Minimalism, Conceptual Art and Photorealism. The exhibition - based not only on the extraordinary work commissioned by Peggy Guggenheim from the greatest emerging talents of her day, but also on the subsequent enlargement of her original collections through the purchase of such private collections as the Panza di Biumo collection - will offer visitors an exceptional selection of "icons" from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
