The tale of Cupid and Psyche

March 16, 2012 - June 10, 2012
Modern Art (from the XV to the XIX century)

The tale of Cupid and Psyche: from the origin of the myth to Antonio Canova.

The exhibition, in a hall of Castel Sant'Angelo, hinges on the frieze painted by Perin del Vaga for Pope Paul III Farnese which depicts the story of Psyche.  The exhibition illustrates the various interpretations of the myth, so complex that it offers several layers of reading, from antiquity to Neoclassicism of which Antonio Canova creates sublime works, finaly passing through the great cycles of the Renaissance from Raphael to Giulio Romano, from Perin del Vaga to Polidoro of Caravaggio.
