The Borghese family and antiquity

December 7, 2011 - April 9, 2012
Archaeology / Ancient Arts / Medieval Arts (until the XIV century)

For four months, from December 7 until April 9, the Special Superintendency for the Historical, Anthropological Heritage and the Museums of Rome, directed by Rossella Vodret, in collaboration with the Louvre Museum, present the exhibition the Borghese and Antiquity. The event is unique and exceptional because the Borghese Gallery contains masterpieces of the largest and most important collection of antiquities in the world, returning it to its place of origin. The archaeological heritage of the "Borghese marbles", today the classical glory of the Louvre, is one of the most "sensational sales that has ever happened."  These pieces have been restituted to the Borghese Gallery for the first time in 230 years and consist of 60 illustrious works such as the immense Borghese Vase with Dionysiac scenes, the restored Sleeping Hermaphrodite by a young Bernini, the Silenus and Bacchus Child, The Three Graces, and the famous Centaur Ridden by Love, that had never before left the Parisian museum. The exhibition, The Borghese and Antiquity, is curated by Jean-Luc Martinez and Marie Lou Fabrega Dubert for the Louvre Museum, and Anna Coliva and Marina Minozzi for the Borghese Gallery, coordinated by  Mondo Mostra and made possible by the support of Arcus, Enel, Ferrero and Air France.
