Contemporary arts of the XX and XXI century
Preview: 14 MArch 2012
Plegaria Muda is the new ambitious project by Doris Salcedo, comprising 166 sculptural units. These sculptures will fill up the entire Gallery 2 of the MAXXI museum with their enveloping presence. The work stems from a three-year-long research in the ghettoes of South East Los Angeles, but it is also a direct answer to repeated atrocities committed by groupings within the Colombian army between the years 2003 and 2009. Plegaria Muda may be translated as "Mute Prayer" and it responds to acts of violence with a contemplative stillness. It does not tell stories of individual victims, but in silence it gives voice to a collective trauma that has caused festering wounds throughout an entire social fabric.
Plegaria Muda is commissioned by CAM - Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon and Moderna Museet Malmö and has been produced in close partnership with MAXXI , MUAC – Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City, and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.
